They select Jeff Sheappard #9 a big physical center who is a great defender and can play offense but might be slow. At #17 they trade the pick plus O'SUllivan for Pavel Demitra a big scorer from the LA Kings. Demitra is from Slovakia and the hope is he will persuad Gabby to stay in Minnesota. A line of Rolston, Demitra, and Gabby will be a great first line. Now they must go out in free agency and add some talent to mix with the youth especially on the blue line.

Well, who do you suggest?
Is Jeff Sheappard gonna be any good? Anywhere I can find a bio or reports about the guys in the NHL draft?

To keep Gabby they just have to stop being cheap skates. They have been raking in the cash yet, they want to still be cheap.

Now that I have done homework on both Wild moves in the 1st round, I cannot say I'm real happy.
They get a slow skating C and an aged and injured Dimitria. Dimitria is 31 and this is a Wild type move an aged veteran that the fans will be happy about because of his past. They trade away a young talent in O'SUllivan that may have been worth more to the Wild in the long run. I think we will regret this trade in the future.

if demitra helps resign gabby, then it was worth it. giving up o'sullivan for an aging player may signal a few moves for the forthcoming season by the wild. ok, i'm hoping this is the case. i agree that this team needs to start spending.

Is Demitra going to help us resign Gabby and is Sullivan a for sure cant miss All Star? I guess I think this team has been building for to long the way it is and they have their top pick in last years draft ready to take O'Sullivan's spot anyway. It isnt like they went a dealt the one player that they have to play. They traded a good prospect who in the long run is sitting behing the third overall pick in last years draft. As far as Sheappard goes I am not overly concerned by him he isnt going to help next year anyway. The Wild must win now.
By the way in hockey years 31 is not that old many Hockey players play at a very good level into their late 30's.

31 isn't all that old in hockey years and the guy is a pretty good scorer (which the Wild desperately need) who also happened to be +21 in 58 games last season. His most recent injury was a nasal fracture, which I'm sure is rather unpleasant, but doesn't seem like the kind of thing that's going to shorten a career. O'Sullivan looks promising, but I think they need to start putting a few pieces of the puzzle together sooner rather than later.

I agree they need to do something significant. I should be more optimistic about it, but right now I am sour on Wild management. Not ready to think they are doing anything significant.
And it smells like them trying to find a way of keeping Gabby without paying him the money. They have been cheap on him so far and now are reaping the reward in him not willing to budge much on salary demands.

It certainly hasn't been pleasant, and while I do understand their reluctance to pay Brad Richard Money (BR$) to Gaborik, I hope they understand the market. I'm not sure how arbitration works in the NHL (can they trade him while on his 1-yr deal?, etc.), but if it comes to that like everyone seems to be saying it will then what happens next summer? They certainly risk alienating the guy by playing hardball like this to the point where regardless of what happens next season he might say "screw you guys I'm going home". Or to Detroit. Or whoever will give him BR$. Not to mention that if the Wild do play well and Gaborik busts out a 50-goal season or something like that they're going to have to pay him more than BR$ next year if they want to keep him. Then again they may just be posturing, hoping Gaborik and his agent blink, then at the last minute sign him to a 5-year deal for slightly less than BR$. If they do let it go to arbitration, I think it's a mistake.
