Shooting guard Lawrence Westbrook signed a scholarship tender Wednesday to play for the Minnesota men's basketball team.
The 6-foot, 190-pound player from Chandler, Ariz., spent his senior season at the Winchendon Prep school in Massachusetts — where he averaged 18 points per game. Rivals.com, a national recruiting analyst, ranked Westbrook as the 75th-best player in the nation.
As a junior, Westbrook led the country with an average of 40.1 points per game, according to a university news release. He broke the Arizona state single-season scoring record, finishing with 883 points in 22 games.
Westbrook originally signed a letter of intent to play for Iowa State, but he was released from the agreement when Cyclones coach Wayne Morgan and his staff were fired last month.
After losing seniors Vince Grier, Moe Hargrow and Adam Boone, the Gophers will have plenty of openings for playing time in the backcourt.
